Stations for all competitors are chosen by drawing lots. In straight sprint races the competitor drawn first is placed on the left of the track facing the finishing line (known as lane 1) and all other competitors arc placed outward from there. In races on a spherical course the competitor draw first is placed nearest the center of the track and the others follow from there.
