Substitutions

Sport: Baseball

A substitution in baseball refers to the act of removing one player from play and replacing them with another player that is on the bench. A substitute player should be one who is on the 40 man roster, and is available in the dugout to be used.

Who Can be Substituted During a Baseball Game?

During a game of baseball, there are four ways substitutes can be made. These include:

  • Pinch Hitter
  • Pinch Runner
  • Pitching Change
  • Fielder Change

This means that anyone covered by those categories can be substituted. A team can have unlimited substitutions during a game of baseball, but a substituted player must take the place of the player they have substituted on the batting order. As a result of this, the player that has been removed cannot return to play.
