Catch

What is the Definition of a Catch in Baseball?

A catch in baseball is awarded to a fielder once they have securely caught a baseball without it bouncing first. The fielder is then able to pass the ball to another fielder. When a ball has been caught in this manner, the batter is out.

Illegal Catches in Baseball

There are ways in which a catch in baseball can be made illegal and be disallowed. In order for this to occur, one of the following situations must happen.

  • If the batted ball collides or hits another member of the offense or defense before being caught.
  • If the fielder uses anything but their hand or glove to catch the ball, it is illegal.
