Safety shot

(Sport: Snooker)

There are a number of occasions when a player will find themselves near to the pack of reds, but have no chance of potting a ball. In this situation, the player will normally strike the cue ball toward the baulk area of the table, so that it hits a red ball on the way but then ends up as far away as possible from the remaining red balls. This makes it difficult for their opponent to score points themselves.
