(Sport: Gliding)

Gliding describes flying in an aircraft without the assistance of engines (it is perfectly possible to glide in aircraft with engines that are not being used). Gliders are towed into the air by a winch or other aircraft, and gain height by seeking out thermals. In competition, pilots are judged on altitude, distance or speed.
